Without him and his addictions there would be far, far less SDBs around....so thx to him for that....and dont forget his job was not to make recordings sound good, his job was to make it sound good live....and for the most part I think he accomplished that.

Is there documentation that he traded SBD feeds for blow? I've seen the accusation discussed before, but some seem to discount it as legend.

As a sound engineer, his job may have been to "make "it" sound good live", but wouldn't that include Bob. Echo, heavy reverb and pitch shifting might work on the instruments, but I gotta believe he intentionally used those on Bobby's vocal mike. Most bands would fire the sound man immediately for that kind of BS. The general consensus is that "the band", except Bob and Phil wanted to keep Dan around. I find that quite confusing.

BTW, I was a mule/gopher/"sound man" for a group of friends in high school. Got demoted to a 2 job grunt for allowing feedback on the vocal mike at a YMCA dance.

I can confirm that Healy gave out a few patches to someone who gave him blow.

12/1/79
5/19/77
8/4/76
9/25/76

are some examples...

sounds like personal experience;)

Ok, so he was "patchin'" for nose candy

why did the band put up with Healy's BS?

and why did Phil and Bobby's opinions seem not to matter?

the band never listened to tape and thier monitors dont pickup the PA mix to which dan would effect bobs vocals. apparently bob was made aware by his camp and had been apealling to phil and jerry for years. the incident at RFK where he embarrassed the band by not giving Sting full power was the catalyst for them to finally quit blowing bob off and listen to tape.

the reason bob had never gotten traction before that was said to be because of healys tenure and status with jerry and phil. he wasnt just an employee he had been the soundman since 66 when he was working for Quicksilver and phils bass rig failed and he repaired it allowing their set to happen.

About this Dan Healy being the enemy mixer. Most of you guys are right ,that is job was on stage as it happened and was to feather the mix to suit the band and of course the specific venue. What I did hear was that he favored the DEAD as the lead act and boost the mix and pa accordingly. This came to a head when Sting complained to Healy who blew him off and up the ladder it went and when Lesh heard about this, he was fired for cause. That's the story I was told...LW

So it was OK for him to mess with Bobby, but messin' with Sting got him fired. It still doesn't make sense to me.

Hell, did he work for the band, or did they work for him. It seems, for a while, the latter was true and he was trying to get rid of Mr. Weir.

sounds kinda like "documentation" to me

especially if your friends just happened to leave a small package on the soundboard just before the show

I have been going through various '80's shows, '83-'88, and it is amazing the number of shows with unbelievably bad sound.
You can grab a Bear '66 and the sound blows away so many '80's shows. For all his eccentricities we all owe a huge debt to Bear.

As far as Healy, I don't know. He certainly did take liberties, but it sounds like many people did. I remember a photo of Weir pumping gas on an eighteen wheeler in '74 and thinking, why is he doing that?

if you are listening to sdbs you have to remember that the mix was set for the sound for the venue NOT THE RECORDING!!!
